Common sunflowers are broadleaf annual herbs that belong to aster family. They grow up to 3 m in height and have head up to 30 cm in diameter. Fruits are conical, typically 8..16 mm long. Notwithstanding the plant is native to Central and North America, commercialization of it took place in Russia. There are three products in the market: in-shell and shelled sunflower seed kernels, and also meats.
Harvest timeHarvest time is about 110-150 days after planting. It is September – October in East Europe, China and USA and March – April in Argentina

UsesMost of sunflower seeds are processed into vegetable oil, because of oil content which is 40-45% by weight. Confectionery seeds have lower in fat and are delicious snack food, ingredient in bread, cakes and other confectionery. Seeds that are below food grade standards are used for birdseeds.
